Pousada Elvas public area
Pousada dining room The city of
Elvas is located near the border between Portugal and Spain
and is on the main highway between Lisbon and Madrid. The
town was originally founded by the Romans then
occupied by the Moors in 1229. Elvas has always been a
fortified city in a disputed border area and has suffered
numerous attacks. The old town is
completely surrounded by a series of strong walls that
strategically provide protection from most angles of
possible attack. The castle in the old quarter was built in
before historical records recorded it, but it was rebuilt in
1226 and has undergone much rebuilding and fortifying in the
succeeding centuries. The Church of
Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos hides was originally built by the
Templar knights. Close by is a Manueline Pillory with its
hooks as a morbid reminder of punishment in older times.
