This is a part of Portugal that runs at
a slower pace - tranquil and rural - where traditional crafts (every
town and village has its own craft specialty), and
cuisine still remain the norm.
It is a fairly dry and flat area with few mountains and
rivers - that yet still produces some of Portugals' best wines (there
are Bodegas and wine cooperatives in Vidigeira, Borba, Reguengos and
Redondo), and
cheeses.
Cork is another of this area's main
products - as is fine marble which is quarried near Estremoz.
This is great country for exploring by
car. Get off on the local roads, and make your own discoveries. There
are quaint traditional villages and castle ruins scattered all across
this 'big' land. And you'll
always have one of the wonderful Pousadas within a short drive of your
previous night's location.
In fact, the Alentejo has 13 of Portugal's Pousadas
closely spaced across its beautiful countryside.
