Pousada
Setubal (official name Pousada
São Filipe)
sits on the site of the 16th century fort
of
Sao Filipe. It overlooks the Sado river estuary, and the Atlantic near the
peninsula Troia.
Nighttime view from Pousada terrace
The entrance to
the Pousada is by a discreet door, strategically opened in a reserved
corner in the base of the fortress. The national shield with its five
edges is sculpted in the stone above that door. Then a ramp of 40
worn-out steps, inside of a high and arched tunnel, gives access to
the Pousada.
In the middle
of the flight of stairs stands a room that is now used as a meeting
room. Four hundred years ago it was the entrance of the prison. On
arriving at the top of the stairs, on the left side, you will find the
private chapel of the fort - containing a wonderful coating of tiles
from the 18th century depicting various figures and scenes.
The view from the Pousada Setubal is breathtaking. In one sweeping
panorama, you can take in the immense blue of the Setúbal bay,
the riverside zone of the city, the wonderful beaches of the peninsula
of Troia, and in the mountain of Arrábida. That view makes
dining in the restaurant especially pleasant.
The city of Setubal is a main port. It
has wonderful waterfront walks, and a fascinating historic quarter. It
is only a 45 min. drive to the capital of Lisbon.
At the Pousada
Setubal, everything
is adapted to receive and present the visitor with the most modern
conveniences, while much of furniture in the public areas are antiques
from centuries past. Eight of the rooms have a sea view; the other
eight are inner rooms.
