The elegant Pousada Vila Viçosa (official name, D. João IV) is set in a former Convent in the historical village of Vila Viçosa. As much as possible has been kept intact while at the same time bring the building up to the best of modern, luxury standards.

There is exquisite tile throughout - with marble doorways, and Italian Renaissance influences - and all in such a tasteful and beguiling style.

The monastery was founded in the early 16th century by the Duke of Bragança along with a number of other works in the town, like the castle and the city walls.
